The taper
end allows for firm insertion at heel of switch between stock
rail and point. This allows the employee a safe bite before applying pressure. By starting move
at full head, the least amount of point possible is to
be moved, lessening required pressure by employee.
Comparatively using a lining bar
employee must start move of points much further back towards
heel to allow insertion of lining bar 1 1/2 in diameter. The
lining bar as well has no firm bite and slipping during
initial push is common.

Point can easily be worked over with an
absolute bite, each time pressure is applied on point. The
curvature of the tool actually bites under the undercut of
switch point for a positive bite. The curve in the bar itself
also allows for positive leverage.
This tool is especially useful
in long switch points which require multiple shoves to align
point.
Employees perform switch point
adjustment more effectively due to absolute closure made
easier.
